The cats and dogs at the SCAN Animal Sanctuary in El Verger have finally been blessed.

Fr Rodney Middleton and Fr Robin Pettitt of the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy visited the sanctuary on February 27 to bless them on February 27.

More than 100 SCAN supporters enjoyed the barbecue and blessing ceremony which would normally have been held in January to coincide with the feast day of the patron saint of animals, San Antonio, but was postponed owing to the Covid restriction then in place.

After blessing individual pets brought forward by their owners, Frs Rodney and Robin blessed all the cats and dogs that are awaiting forever homes at the sanctuary.

SCAN – Society for the Care of Animals in Need – takes in abandoned cats and dogs, provides shelter as well as medical care when necessary and has successfully found homes, in Spain and internationally, for around 3,000 cats and dogs.

The association works closely with local town halls, giving advice on combining animal welfare with Spain’s evolving animal protection laws.

SCAN also carries out school visits, helping the next generation to understand the importance of responsible pet ownership.
