Four Russian fighter jets violate Swedish airspace

The Swedish government have scrambled jets in response to a short-lived intrusion by four Russian fighter jets who violate Swedish airspace.

The incident, which took place east of Gotland over the sea, was described as “very serious” and “irresponsible on the part of the Russians”.

The Swedish Air Force Incident Response Team’s Jas 39 Gripen aircraft intercepted the Russian craft and documented the incident with a photograph.

Air Force chief Carl-Johan Edström said: “This shows that our preparedness is good. We were there to secure Sweden’s territorial integrity and borders. We are in full control of the situation.

“In view of the current situation, we take this incident very seriously. It is an unprofessional and irresponsible act on the part of the Russians.”

Putin has threatened Sweden saying that he would attack the country if they too opted to join NATO, only days before four Russian fighter jets enter Swedish airspace. The incident raises the spectre of an escalation in the war on a day it became clear that more than 2,000 civilians had been killed in Ukraine and more than a million having fled the country.
