CALPE councillors rejected a PSOE proposal to name the town’s second high school after a woman.
Citing a 2019 Generalitat edict which recommended an increase in the number of centres that commemorated “outstanding females,” the socialists suggested that the Institute of Calpe Studies should create a list of women who had made their mark on Calpe.
One of these could then give her name to the new school, the PSOE said.
Calpe’s mayor, Ana Sala, did not agree.
“Why should a woman’s name take precedence over a man, object or event?” she asked.
Despite the growing trend in other municipalities to honour women in this say, Partido Popular and Ciudadanos voted against the PSOE proposal.
Should no agreement be eventually reached over the high school’s name this will simply be known as Instituto No 2.
