The draw for the quarter-finals of the Champion’s League 2022 took place at the House of European Football at UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, on Friday, March 18.

At this stage of the competition, there was no such thing as an ‘easy draw’, but some mouth-watering ties were still drawn out of the hat.

Most notably, the current holders of the trophy, Chelsea, will face 13-time winners, Real Madrid. This produces an exciting reunion between Carlo Ancelotti and his former club. Between 2009 and 2011, the Italian won the Premier League and FA Cup double with the Stamford Bridge outfit.

These two sides met in last year’s semi-final. Thomas Tuchel‘s men ran out 3-1 winners on aggregate. An interesting statistic going into this tie is that in five previous clashes with the Spanish giants, Chelsea have never lost.

After beating Manchester United 2-1 on aggregate, Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid must now play the blue half of the city. Manchester City and Atletico have never met in a European competition. Pep Guardiola’s side strolled through to the last eight with a 5-0 drubbing of Sporting Lisbon.

Jurgen Klopp and his Liverpool team will meet Portugal’s Benfica. Both giants for decades on the European stage, they have played each other on 10 previous occasions. Benfica pulled off a massive win against Ajax in Amsterdam to reach this round.

Bayern Munich and Spain’s Villarreal will contest the other quarter-final. The ‘yellow submarines’ won through after defeating Italian giants Juventus in an impressive 3-0 win in Turin.

The draw for the semi-finals was also made. Chelsea or Real Madrid will face Atletico Madrid or Manchester City, while Benfica or Liverpool will play either Villarreal or Bayern Munich.

Quarter-final matches will take place on April 5-6 April and April 12-13. The semi-finals will be played on April 26-27 April, and the second legs on May 3-4.

This year’s final on Saturday, May 28, will now be played in Paris, at the Stade de France, after being moved from St Petersburg as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
