The heat causes swift chicks to leave their nests before they are ready, making it difficult for them to survive. The Balearic Islands Government has asked citizens to help.

On June 23, the councillor for the Environment and Territory of the Balearic Islands Government, Miquel Mir, visited the facilities of the Consortium for the Recovery of the Fauna of the Balearic Islands (COFIB) in Santa Eugenia, where more than 500 young swifts that have fallen out of their nests due to the heat have been brought in over the last few weeks.

Since May, when this species migrated to the archipelago to breed, the COFIB has taken care of 717 swifts, the majority of which are chicks. During the week of June 13 to 20 alone, 379 swifts affected by the high temperatures arrived at COFIB.

The councillor stressed the importance of public involvement in taking care of the birds. Swifts nest in holes where the temperature can be particularly high. This leads them to fly outside in search of fresh air before they have learned how to fly. If a citizen finds a swift, they can take it directly to COFIB or call their emergency number on 607 55 40 55.
