POSTAL workers demonstrated outside the Campohermoso (Nijar) post office in protest at Correos’ failure to engage more summer staff.

The publicly-owned service has failed to replace three motorised postal delivery workers, Campohermoso sources revealed, and there are also days when four or five people are absent for one reason or another.

“This means that the staff are overloaded with work,” they said.

They have also had to cope with the heatwave which is even more oppressive in the area, owing to the the plastic green-housing which makes temperatures rise still higher.

“It is unacceptable that managers in Almeria City are not taking these exceptional circumstances into account,” Francisco Sabio from the SIPCTE union told the provincial Spanish media.

“It’s inhuman to make the postmen and postwomen work at certain times of the day when employees in Nijar’s polytunnels and builders don’t have to,” he said.

It should be possible to change the posties’ working hours to avoid possible risks, the union official suggested.  “Or will we have to introduce measures only after there’s been a disaster?”

Meanwhile, a statement from Correos maintained that it would take “the necessary organisational steps” to “fully guarantee postal deliveries and attend to the public throughout the province of Almeria.”
