Last minute bookings save the day for Almeria province's tourism

SUMMER SEASON: Coastal areas like Mojacar look forward to full occupancy Photo credit: William Helsen

AT the beginning of this year, prospects for Almeria province’s tourist season looked extremely promising.

“We were emerging from the pandemic and looking forward to returning to normality,” said Isabel Juan Rodriguez, manager of the Ashal association which represents the province’s hospitality sector.

“Unfortunately, the events of recent months have conspired to prevent us having the high season we were hoping for,” she added.

“The Ukraine war, inflation and Almeria’s communications problems made us lower our sights.”

But despite initial disappointment, numerous businesses – especially along the coast – will still be putting up “No vacancies” notices.

In contrast to other summers, there has been a flood of last-minute bookings, Juan Rodriguez said.

“Thanks to this, many establishments will have good occupancy figures,” she predicted.

“Members are also pointing out that tourists are opting for all-inclusive full board packages. That way they know how much they are going to spend from the outset.”

Although spending is more restrained, the province’s hospitality industry continues to hope that they will have a little left over for extras as the tourist season reaches its height, the Ashal manager said.
