CARBONERAS FIRE: Extinguished before it could spread Photo credit: Infoca
Andalucia’s body that is dedicated to fighting forest fires first reported the fire in Carboneras’ Saltador Alto area at 11am and within an hour announced that it was under control.
Owing to the inaccessible lie of the land, seven forest-firefighters were flown in by a light helicopter, together with an operational expert and an Environmental officer.
All remained on the scene, hosing down the zone to prevent possible rekindling for some time afterwards.
The Carboneras fire was preceded by another on the evening of August 10, affecting 9.5 hectares, this time in Las Hortichuelas inside the Cabo de Gata-Nijar national park. This took longer to control, as Infoca informed that it was not officially extinguished until 10pm the following day.
