Explosions in Zaporіzhіа and Kharkiv regions of Ukraine late on Tuesday, August 23

Explosions have occurred in both the Zaporіzhіа and Kharkiv regions late on the evening of Tuesday, August 23.

As reported on local social media networks, part of the occupied Tokmak, Zaporіzhіа region is on fire this evening, Tuesday, August 23. This is close to where Russian troops are guarding the nuclear plant. Multiple explosions and air raid sirens have been reported in the region.

According to a Ukrainian military intelligence alert released earlier in the day, shelling by Russian forces had raised radioactive dust clouds around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. It had allegedly resulted in elevated radiation levels nearby.

The Ukrainian energy company Energoatom reported on Tuesday, August 23 that Russia had deployed additional military equipment and personnel to Zaporizhzhia on Monday. According to their report, two armoured vehicles and four lorries were observed entering the premises.

They claimed that as many as “40 military vehicles have been positioned in the power plant until now”.

This report comes as talks continue to try and send a team of experts from the U.N. nuclear watchdog International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) into the facility to inspect it. Rafael Grossi, the chief of the watchdog issued a statement saying he was hopeful that this would happen in the next few days.

In another part of Ukraine, a huge explosion was reported earlier this evening, at around 9:30pm local time in the central Kharkiv region. No further information has been verified, and it is not known what caused the massive blast, but it is thought that Russian Air Force strategic bombers are active.

Air raid sirens have also been reported as sounding in the Odesa region of southern Ukraine late this evening, but there have been no further updates posted online.
