Dutch police confirm six fatalities after Spanish-owned lorry crashes into Netherlands barbecue party

Six people are confirmed by Dutch police to have died after a lorry lost its brakes and crashed into a crowd of people enjoying a barbecue in the Netherlands.

Dutch police have confirmed that six people died in the incident involving a lorry that crashed into a barbecue organised by a local ice club, on Saturday, August 27. The tragic accident occurred in the village of Nieuw-Beijerland in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands.

Another seven people were injured, one of whom is critical in the hospital said the police. According to the regional channel Rijnmond, the police confirmed that among the six fatalities of three males and three females were a mother, her son, and his eight-month-pregnant wife. Their ages ranged from 28 to 75.

The 46-year-old Spanish lorry driver was arrested after the incident and reportedly tested negative for alcohol. He is allegedly suspected of causing accidental death, as reported by nu.nl.

It has been reported this afternoon, Saturday, August 27, that a lorry drove into a crowd of people in the village of Nieuw-Beijerland in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands. Mixed reports claim that from two to four people have been killed, with around six or eight more injured, according to @Worldsource24.

It is believed that the vehicle’s brakes failed and the driver lost control. Several people who were apparently enjoying a community barbecue are thought to have become trapped underneath the vehicle as it came to a halt. Emergency services have been deployed to the scene and a rescue operation is said to be underway.

According to police sources, the lorry belongs to the Spanish transport company El Mosca, based in the Murcia town of Molina de Segura. It will reportedly be seized by the authorities for a technical review. The driver was reportedly unharmed in the incident and was taken in for questioning by the police.

A video posted on Twitter courtesy of @MauLaparliere shows the tow truck arriving at the location of the accident.
