In 2016, founders of the Euro Weekly News Michel and Steven Euesden appeared on the tv show ‘Marbella Now’ to discuss the success of their expat oriented English-language newspaper, the most widely read publication of its kind in Spain. During the 15 minute interview they also spoke about their successful business venture.

During the interview the couple spoke about the good, the bad and the ugly (mostly the good) of working together on the Euro Weekly News. Neither of the founders shied away from revealing that distributing the paper is “a lot of work” because the paper is now distributed across six of Spain’s regions, covering a lot of coast.

Nevertheless, as a self-professed “workaholic”, Michel revealed that she felt lucky to be able to say “my hobby is my passion”.

When asked to share how they got started in the newspaper business, Steven revealed that it was “a long time ago and it’s a long story”, as they started The Euro Weekly News in 2002, moving to Spain only 7 years prior.

Both businesspeople have been in newspapers for over 20 years both individually and together, so it was an endeavour they were familiar with and ready to take on. Steven, taking the lead in the interview, explains how The Euro Weekly News has “gone from strength to strength” and has been “a great journey” to get them to where they are today.

Steven explains that the couple’s reasoning for moving to Spain was due to both of their desires for a “fresh start” on their own as a couple. After which Michel explains that although she hates using the word “expat”, that’s what Euro Weekly News is at the end of the day, a publication “to help people to actually integrate into this wonderful society” in Spain. She describes their business as “24/7, a family” and that’s what she wants people to know.

The couple also spoke about how much they enjoy working together. For both business partners, family is the most important thing and Michel says “we can’t imagine not working together”, working together for them both is “the norm”, despite how advised against it often is to work with your spouse or partners.

In a manner that would melt even the hardest of hearts, both Steven and Michel willingly subscribe to self-acknowledged stereotypes, as Michel confides “I can’t imagine my life without him, he’s my best friend” and Steven reveals that it was in fact love at first sight, even though Steven never took Michel out on a date other than buying her a cup of tea!

The couple met in 1996, and Michel reveals that since the day Steven told her he loved her, the pair haven’t been apart since. Neither party claim to have a perfect marriage, but they thrive on being able to work together and work through everything together, which is what makes both their relationship and their business so successful.

Touchingly, Michel promotes living in the present, not worrying about tomorrow until it comes, and doing the best to benefit the lives of others.
