German Chancellor Olaf Scholz signs deal for UAE to supply LNG and diesel

The UAE is to supply Germany with liquified natural gas (LNG) and diesel after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz closed a deal with them.

As reported by the state news agency WAM, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz signed a deal with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Sunday, September 25, for the Middle Eastern country to supply Germany with shipments of diesel, liquified natural gas (LNG), and low-carbon ammonia. 

Scholz started a two-day visit to the Gulf on Saturday 24. he was in Saudi Arabia prior to the UAE. The visit was made with the objective of discussing energy cooperation between the nations, which culminated in their signing of the agreement. The Chancellor is also due to visit Qatar.

As a result of his meeting, later this year – believed to be in December – the German utility RWE will receive its first supply from the UAE’s Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. (ADNOC).

Without giving further details, the agency added that ADNOC also earmarked several other LNG cargoes for German customers for delivery in 2023. ADNOC also closed a deal with the German Wilhelm Hoyer GmbH & Co. KG (Hoyer) to supply up to 250,000 tons of diesel per month in 2023, as reported by aa.com.

Speaking after signing the deals, Scholz said: “I welcome the signing of the joint declaration of intent on the Energy Security and Industry Accelerator – ESIA. Through ESIA, we enable the swift implementation of strategic lighthouse projects on the focus areas of renewable energies, hydrogen, LNG, and climate action”.

After Gazprom closed the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline supply to Germany indefinitely, Scholz – as well as other European leaders – has been desperately searching for alternative sources of energy.
