Man swept to his death in flooding caused by torrential rain in Murcia, Spain

A man was swept to his death in Murcia, Spain, after torrential rain caused a flood that took him in his sleep in the early morning hours of Monday, September 26.

The news of the death of a man following the torrential rain in Murcia, Spain, was shared on Twitter by the Murcia Fire Service, who stated:

“02:11 #Javaliviejo”

“1 dead and many people rescued from their homes. The waterspout completely flooded the houses. The body was found about 300m from the house that had been washed away. ”

“Our condolences to family and friends.”

Jose Antonio Serrano, the Mayor of Murcia took to Twitter to comment on the incident stating:

‘Last night a severe storm caused serious problems in the municipality. Unfortunately, we have to mourn the death of one person.’

‘I would like to express my deepest condolences. The municipal services are working hard to restore normality as soon as possible.’

The news follows reports of a downpour that resulted in the death of a Calpe policeman, with Benissa receiving more than a quarter of its annual rainfall fall within an hour.

The downpour resulted in the gulleys (barancs) and rivers overflowing, creating the torrent that swept the policeman away whilst doing his best to save someone else’s life.
