Wagner Group financier Prigozhin says its activities radically changed fate of DPR and LPR

Wagner Group financier Yevgeny Prigozhin, who has reportedly begun to close in on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s role, said the group’s formation radically changed the fate of the DPR and LPR.

Yevgeny Prigozhin said that after setting up the Wagner Group in 2014 its activities radically changed the fate of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and Luhansk People’s Republics (LPR), as reported on Monday, September 26.

“In 2014, when the genocide of the Russian population of Donbas began, when Russia jumped on the last steam train and managed to block the arrival of the Ukrainian army in Crimea, I, like many other businessmen, went to the training grounds where the ‘Cossacks’ were gathering and tried to scrap money in order to recruit a group that would go and protect the Russians,” Prigozhin told Russian news outlet RIA.

He added that among these “Cossacks” were many crooks who took the money, recruited volunteers and sent them “naked and barefoot to the real death.”

“From that moment, on May 1, 2014, a group of patriots was born, which later acquired the name of BTG Wagner,” Prigozhin said.

The Wagner Group – a network of mercenaries and a de facto private army of Russia’s President Vladimir Putin – have been a side story to the war so far in Ukraine.

They have suffered significant losses according to many military experts and were even reportedly sent to reinforce the front line alongside Russian soldiers.

Both the DPR and LPR are currently holding referendums on joining the Russian Federation.
