BREAKING UPDATE: Levee break in Sarasota, Florida WILL impact homes on east side of hidden river community

AN update from the Sarasota Sheriff’s Office has revealed that the levee break near the Myakka River in Sarasota, Florida WILL affect some homes.

UPDATE 3.05 pm (October 1) – The Sheriff’s Office of Sarasota, Florida said on Twitter: “An Everbridge notification was issued just before 3 am indicating a possible levee break in the Hidden River community.

“The notification was issued countywide which means all residents throughout Sarasota County who are registered w/Everbridge likely received a warning.”

It added: “To clarify – the levee compromise appears that it WILL ONLY IMPACT HOMES ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE HIDDEN RIVER COMMUNITY (a neighbourhood located east on Fruitville Road).

“For additional clarification, the compromise SHOULD NOT impact any other areas in Sarasota County including Venice or North Port.

“At this time, deputies are working with Sarasota County Fire personnel to go door-to-door and advise residents of potential flooding. Residents are encouraged to consider evacuation.”

Other reports circulating online suggest that “overnight FHP Troopers consolidated the I-75 closure at Sumter Blvd in Sarasota County due to the flooding waters of the Myakka River.

“I-75 is now only closed southbound at Exit 193 (Jacaranda Blvd) & northbound at Exit 179 (North Port / Toledo Blade Blvd).”


ORIGINAL 10.22 am (Saturday 1) – A LEVEE has reportedly broken near the Myakka River in Sarasota, Florida, according to local reports on Saturday, October 1.

Early reports from Sarasota, Florida suggest that the potential levee break in an area of Hidden River/Myakka Valley means that water could rise as high as 15 feet within minutes.

According to officials, all residents have been told to evacuate to higher ground if possible.

One person on Twitter wrote: “Possible levee break in area of Hidden River/Myakka Valley with the potential of 15ft of flood water residents are urged to shelter in place if it is safe to do so as exit routes and roadways maybe impassable.”

The news comes after a seal running along the streets of Florida as a result of Hurricane Ian.
