A strong earthquake measuring 6.9 magnitude on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Panama this afternoon, Thursday, October 20. Its epicentre was located about 38 miles south-southwest of the town of Boca Chica, in San Lorenzo District in Chiriqui Province. The tremor occurred at 11.57am local time.
An official tsunami warning has not yet been issued but the situation is being monitored. There have been no initial reports of damage to structures on the mainland.
