EQUALITY NETWORK: Investigation into Marina Alta prostitution Photo credit: Teulada-Moraira town hall
The Marina Alta has one of the Valencian Community’s highest concentrations of locations where prostitution is available, the Xarxa pointed out.
Findings stressed prostitution’s links to social factors and the connection between the social constructs of masculinity and the way that using sexual services was learnt and shared, while being made to appear natural and legitimate in the context of work, fiestas and sport.
The Xarxa investigation was carried out by the La Dula, a cooperative which encourages community action processes and social investigation. Their report included a map of Marina Alta localities where prostitution was available, listing streets, clubs, apartments and the internet.
This, La Dula found, illustrated the transition from clubs and bars along main roads to a new formula in apartments and villas with new technology playing a central role.
The report proposed a series of recommendations aimed at orientating policies and actions to eliminate the “multiple inequalities” that made prostitution possible.
While Xarxa was convinced that women ensnared in prostitution had to be a priority for administration policies, these also needed to deal with clients, who were the key players.
