According to the Itzehoe police, bystanders were able to overpower the man and to hold him until the police arrived. He is said to be one of those injured in the incident and he remains in the hospital under police guard.

The man is believed to be a stateless 33-year-old Palestinian and is not believed to be an extremist, with police suspecting that he has mental issues.

According to De Bild he has appeared been convicted for sexual and violent offences in the past and was in custody until a week ago.
