Ever since the creation of Dogecoin in 2013, meme coins have taken over the crypto arena. While Dogecoin was created as a joke, its successors aim to be taken seriously in the market. The reception of these coins appears to be mixed – some doubt the utility of these novelty coins. Others see them as an alluring investment opportunity. Here, we’ll take a look at three meme coins to add some fun to your portfolio – DigiToads, Shiba Inu, and Big Eyes Coin.
Prepare for Toadmageddon! DigiToads seeks to become the amphibian overlord in the meme coin market with its play-to-earn features and metaverse ventures. Despite being new to the scene, DigiToads has already made waves with its pre-sale, raising more than $130k and selling over 13 million tokens.
The game involves TOADS NFT battles in the Swamp metaverse. At the end of each season, DigiToads rewards the top 25% of players with TOADS tokens. DigiToads also helps out real toads in the Amazon rainforest – they pledge to donate 2.5% of its profits to help replant trees and save the forest.
When you call yourself ‘the Dogecoin killer’, you know you have high hopes for yourself. Created in 2020, Shiba Inu was created to directly compete with Dogecoin. It quickly gained a fanbase (dubbed ‘SHIBArmy’) who were drawn in by the cute image and endorsements from people like Elon Musk. It is the Ethereum-based counterpart to DOGE’s Srypt-based algorithm.
SHIB’s ecosystem includes NFTs, a metaverse, and a Layer 2 scaling system called Shibarium. The doggy coin has also done charity work – it has created a campaign with Amazon Smile to rescue real Shiba Inu dogs. You can say this dog’s bark is worth every bite!
Meet the newest kitty on the meme coin farm – Big Eyes Coin is technically a meme token but it has plans to go bigger. With over $31 million in the bucket from its pre-sale, BIG is on the path to clashing claws with crypto giants like Ethereum or Bitcoin. It values its community a great deal too – it has pledged to donate a percentage of its profits to ocean conservation organisations and has created a club for NFT holders called the Sushi Crew.
To appeal to gamers, it’s gotten into loot boxes as well. If you enter the Vault Pin 819 on the Big Eyes Coin website, you get free loot boxes with every purchase above $100. The bigger the purchase, the bigger the prizes!
CoinMarketCap lists about 300 coins in the meme category, however, many are effectively worthless at the moment. Meme coins’ prices rise and fall according to speculation, not utility. Could meme coins be useful in the future? It’s hard to say. Big Eyes Coin has gamification, social responsibility, and a strong social media presence going for it. Time will tell if these coins can be used to purchase goods in the future.
