Madrid's best-kept drinks secrets.
Make no mistake, Madrid is one of the best cities in Europe, if not the world, when it comes to having vibrant nightlife. With thousands upon thousands of bars and clubs, there is fun around every corner in the capital. It is easy, however, to know about the most popular places to get a drink. What about the coolest places very few have ever even heard of? Here are three secret bars in Madrid that are sure to impress your friends:
When it comes to keeping your trendy bar a secret, few do it better than El Back. Located on Calle de Piamonte, near the Banco de Espana metro stop, is a speakeasy cocktail room within a normal suburban flat. To make a reservation, you have to call the bar and “make a wish.” The wish that you make is what you want the flat to look like when you and your party arrive, be it a simple birthday celebration, a themed costume do or even a cocktail board game night. The possibilities are endless.
By day, a cosmetics store filled with makeup, jewellery and fragrances. By night, a tropical bar that serves some of the most delicious cocktails around. Pinkcoco on Calle de Santo Tome in Chueca transforms and comes to life after 6 p.m. to become a truly unique speakeasy venue with food, drinks and live music. At midnight, however, the special curse is reversed and the cosmetic store returns, leaving the morning passers-by none the wiser!
While Pinkcoco may be easy to find once the drinks start to flow in-store, Hemingway on Calle de Marqués de Casa Riera is anything but. One of the most fun things about speakeasy bars is the weird and wonderful ways in which you gain entry and this venue near Sol may be just one of a kind. Go into the Hotel NH Collection Suecia, through the toilets and you will find yourself in an early 1900s cocktail bar. The bar, nspired by writer Ernest Hemingway, who spent a lot of time in Madrid, offers a truly retro nightlife experience.
