ON October 24 a special tour of the restoration work on the facade of the Santa Iglesia Catedral de Santa María, the city’s most significant architectural and historical treasure began. The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, along with the Councillor for Culture and Identity, Diego Avilés, recently accompanied the Bishop of the Diocese of Cartagena, Monsignor José Manuel Lorca Planes, on a tour of this historical site.

This tour unveils the hidden secrets of Spain‘s most important iconographic program, designed by the esteemed Valencian architect Jaime Bort over three centuries ago in 1736. The restoration work, initiated in August, is anticipated to last around 12 months. During this time, enthusiasts can take part in a 45-minute journey through the facade after purchasing tickets on the dedicated website, with proceeds contributing to the project. The two central themes of the facade are the Exaltation of the Virgin Mary, to whom the cathedral is dedicated, and the Glorification of the Church. Murcia boasts a rich historical and cultural legacy, with two distinct eras of prosperity: the Islamic period from the 9th to the 13th century and the flourishing Baroque era of the 18th century.
