Stowaway on flight from Egypt detained at Bilbao Airport in Vizcaya

AN unprecedented incident occurred at Loiu Airport in Bilbao this Tuesday, October 24.

A stowaway managed to hide himself away in the hold on a flight that arrived from the Egyptian capital of Cairo. He was eventually detained by the Guardia Civil and placed in the holding room at ‘La Paloma’, from where he will most likely be sent back to Egypt on a direct flight next Monday.

As reported by the Government Delegation in the Basque Country, the aircraft landed early in the afternoon. When the airport workers came to unload the luggage, as they opened one of the hatches in the rear hold of the aircraft, a man jumped out. He subsequently ran across the runway towards the terminal, heading through the area where aircraft transit after landing.

What happened after the man escaped from the hold?

The Vizcayan aerodrome’s Operations Coordination Centre immediately notified the Guardia Civil, which is responsible for the custody and security of the airport.

They ‘urgently initiated the search for and location of the stowaway’, who was being actively pursued ‘through the aircraft landing apron by guards from the security company’. He was finally intercepted by the police and security guards inside the terminal block of the airport.
