Beautiful village abandoned in Canary Islands

Nestled on the smallest of the Canary Islands, La Graciosa, the Pedro Barba is a truly paradisal, breath-takingly beautiful village left entirely uninhabited. 

In 2018, the village homed three residents but they have since moved away, leaving it void of human presence. The village is inhabited by birds and wildlife and is only visited by tourists, who especially during the summer, spend only a few days in the unique location, as most, soon start missing civilization.

Just 6 km from the Caleta de Sebo, the village can be accessed by cycling or even walking along the coast. Hosting a small beach of about 110 metres, the crystal clear sea offers visitors an experience of a lifetime, where dreams of paradise become reality.

The untouched spot is a unique opportunity for nature enthusiasts and all those looking for tranquillity. There are only about 20 small houses in the village; white and well-kept, surrounded by gardens with palm trees.

The village has only been in place since the 1930s, when a wealthy Canarian businessman spotted the profitability of the fishing in the area and decided to set up a fish salting factory. From then, a town by the port was created for workers but in the mid 70s, the majority of the properties and plots were overtaken by a firm, who aimed to make Pedro Barba an unmatchable tourist experience.

Today, Pedro Barba continues to be visited by tourists, who usually come from the island´s capital village, Caleta de Sebo, where the main port connects to the neighbouring island of Lanzarote. In Caleta de Sebo itself, there are only 700 residents, hence Pedro Barba is not often on the forefront of tourist locations.

It is a hidden gem which the locals respect and cherish. Being a nature reserve, there is no possibility of further building and with the stunning and soothing landscape, there seems to be no need or demand for any development; it is the rarity of mesmerising nature being left to itself.
