The Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park, a self-proclaimed “paradise in the Mediterranean”, continues to grow in popularity as it provides unique ways of experiencing it.
The Natural Park in the southeast of the Peninsular is for “Lovers of unique destinations who appreciate the few places on the Mediterranean coast that are still free from the fierce urban development and mass tourism” according to the tourism sector of the Natural Park.
The most common way to experience the Natural Park is to get lost and fall in love with its countless, spectacular and unspoiled beaches.
However, there are other ways to explore and enjoy what Cabo de Gata, and Nijar, have on offer.
First is some of the best kayak routes in the country, which can be enjoyed for less than €45, allowing you to drift the crystal-clear waters in style and explore the natural beauty of the Cabo de Gata.
Additionally, there is the bigger seafaring option of boarding a boat for a ride around the beautiful blues of Cabo de Gata and cruise along the coast of the Natural Park, seeing sights such as sea caves, Cerro Negro and the castle of San Pedro. Buceo Las Negras offer this excursion, which lasts an hour and a half, for €35.
To travel the equally exciting land on offer, consider taking a guided night hike with Astronomia Cabo de Gata, starting in San Jose and learning all about the history and geology of Cabo de Gata – its flora and fauna – as well as the astrology that can be seen above, learning how to locate the North Star and navigate using the stars in the night sky. The night hike lasts roughly three hours and starts at a minimum price of €25.
For the thrill-seekers, consider taking a 4×4 buggy tour of the salt flats and wetlands of the Natural Park, starting at Cabo de Gata’s beach, passing through San Miguel beach, the Sirenas reef, the Vela Blanca viewpoint and all the salt flats and wetlands in between. This excursion last roughly 2 hours and 45 minutes from €38
Alternatively, go old-school and travel by horseback, starting from €30, for “The best way to discover the landscapes, volcanic formations, fauna and nature of this Natural Park,” according to the organisers. There are two routes on offer, one lasting two hours, the route to Cala de Enmedio, or the shorter one hour route Millenary Olive Tree.
The horses are “noble and trained to ride safely and calmly along the trail,” so this activity is possible for anyone even without experience.
All of these excursions can be found and booked on Cabo de Gata’s official website.
