Firefighters have been praised for preventing a potentially much more serious disaster after a major apartment fire broke out in Villajoyosa on Sunday, May 18, leaving one home completely destroyed and another heavily affected by smoke and heat damage.

Emergency services responded rapidly to the incident after flames and thick smoke were reported coming from a residential building in the municipality. The fire generated concern among neighbours as smoke spread through the property and residents gathered outside while emergency crews worked to contain the blaze.

Fire crews stopped flames spreading through building

According to local reports, one apartment was completely burnt out during the incident, while a neighbouring home also suffered considerable damage caused by smoke and high temperatures.

Firefighters worked intensively to stop the flames spreading to additional apartments inside the residential block, an intervention that neighbours later described as crucial in preventing a larger tragedy.

Local police officers secured the area surrounding the building while emergency services assisted residents and monitored the situation during the operation.

Despite the intensity of the fire and the visible damage caused inside the affected homes, no serious injuries were reported.

After extinguishing the blaze, firefighters also carried out ventilation work due to the large amount of smoke trapped inside the building and communal areas.

Residents praised emergency response

Neighbours highlighted the speed and professionalism of the emergency crews, whose rapid intervention helped control the situation before the fire could spread further through the densely populated residential area.

Residents watching the operation from outside the building expressed relief that the incident did not result in fatalities or more extensive structural damage.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the fire and investigations into the incident remain ongoing.

Residential fires remain major concern

The incident once again underlined the importance of rapid emergency response capabilities in Costa Blanca towns, particularly in apartment buildings and residential zones where fires can spread quickly.

Emergency services across Alicante province continue responding to numerous residential fires every year, especially during warmer periods when electrical systems, air-conditioning units and other household equipment experience increased use.

Firefighters frequently stress the importance of prevention measures inside homes, including maintaining electrical installations correctly, avoiding overloaded sockets and ensuring smoke detectors are functioning properly.

The Villajoyosa fire also served as a reminder of the critical role played by emergency crews whose interventions often prevent situations from escalating into far more devastating incidents for residents and surrounding communities.
