MOJACAR Council wants to take action to stop the town becoming branded as a stag night destination.
Mayor Rosa Maria Cano, plans to meet with the local business community to discuss steps that can be taken to change the direction tourism in the town is headed in.
News of the proposed meeting arrives hot in the footsteps of a crack down on noise in bars and clubs, as well as increased police patrols to stamp out the practice of botellón where groups of young people gather in public places to drink alcohol.
The growing reputation as a ‘party destination’ is damaging the image of the town, she said. Cano said that although most of the tourists who visit the town are still families, since last year there is “an increasing number of groups of youths who visit the town with the sole intention of drinking and partying”.
She suggested that this phenomenon was linked to the economic crisis which had led some hotels to accept a different type of clientele.
