Probe into Benitachell tragedy

AN investigation is underway to determine the cause of an accident in which a baby girl was killed after being run over in Benitachell.

The accident occurred at around 12.30 of last Thursday afternoon near the Benitachell health centre when a woman was reversing a car and for unknown reasons lost control of the vehicle colliding with the woman and her children, municipal sources said.

A 23-month-old baby was died and her mother and 2 siblings – both aged under 3 – were injured. The mother, aged 31, and her two injured children were taken to Denia Hospital, but at the time of going to press only the woman remained, although her injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

The driver, a Belgian woman resident in the town, tested negative for alcohol, allowing investigators to eliminate drink being responsible for the tragedy, court sources said.

Despite the rain nearly 250 people including council staff observed one minute silence outside Benitachell Town Hall on Friday in an act of solidarity with the family of the victim.
