MALAGA airport’s expensive second runway is only being used part time.
Built as part of a €410 million project it has nearly doubled the capacity of the airport to 65 flights per hour.
But airport managing director Salvador Merino said it is only being used “depending on the real demand.”
He is limiting the runway’s use because, he says, it is more economically efficient. “And it is more complicated for airlines, so if there is no need for it, we tend to simplify,” he added.
Currently, the second runway is opened only on busy weekends. During the peak summer season it was used every weekend morning.
