The Malaga suburb of Alhaurin de la Torre has been named as a candidate for European City of Sport in 2015.
One of the town’s top distinctions is its status as the birthplace of Malaga Province’s strongest and most competitive cycling club Eurobike-Iknoga, also known as Club Deportivo Laurobike.
The 10-person Laurobike squad, comprised of eight men and two women, was honoured in their public debut in the presence of the mayor along with various other government officials.
Sponsors, cycling school students and members from other teams and clubs throughout the province were also in attendance for the occasion.
The event highlighted the Laurobike team’s impressive achievements, namely more than 50 podium appearances in different official competitions in the past year.
The Laurobike team is considered the best in Malaga and arguably in all of Andalucia and is the only team that meets the requirements of both Spanish and Andaluz cycling federations.
Alhaurin de la Torre’s mayor stated how the town council invests an annual €2 million in athletics promotion, sports infrastructure and the financing of local clubs and teams.
He also announced that the Malaga suburb will host the final of one of the stages of the 2015 Vuelta de Andalucia Tour.
