In the US, football, or ‘soccer’ as its known there, is clearly taking off. The country that has shunned the world’s favourite sport for so long, clearly changed during this summer’s World Cup.
There was no better signal of this than last night’s pre-season match between Manchester United and LA Galway as 90,000 fans packed the Rose Bowl stadium. This attendance number would have been unheard of just two years ago.
However, United were in no mood to accommodate the American fans as they won 7-0, with one goal from Welbeck and two each from Rooney, Young and Reece James. It was the perfect way to kick off Louis van Gael’s era as United manager.
There was more good news for United fans as summer signing Ander Herrera took the man of the match award. He impressed hugely with smart touches and excellent passing.
It may only be a pre-season game but United fans will remember how David Moyes embarrassingly lost his first game in charge against a Thailand all-star side. Therefore, things are finally looking up for the red half of Manchester.
