VELEZ MALAGA: historic building founded by the Catholic Monarchs in the 15th century
THE Provincial Council of Malaga is to invest €1.2 million in the Velez Malaga City Museum.
As many as 2,000 objects are to be on display at the museum, located in Hospital San Juan de Dios – formerly known as Hospital de San Marcos –, a historic building founded by the Catholic Monarchs Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon in 1487, said Culture Councillor Jose Antonio Fortes.
Located at Barrio del Pilar, it served as a military hospital during the 19th century and was later used as a home for senior citizens for almost 100 years.
Visitors to the museum will learn about the history of Velez and the Axarquia from prehistoric times to the 21st century, commented Urban Planning, Infrastructure and Operative Services Councillor Concepcion Labao.
The funds to be invested in the remodelling of the hospital were allocated through the Productive Investments Plan.
