EVICTIONS in Motril are to be a thing of the past thanks to a new law approved unanimously by the town council. This motion was presented by left-wing party Izquierda Unida (IU) to denounce the emergency situation faced by hundreds of citizens in Motril at risk of losing their homes. The new regulation considers that the council must act as a protection for the residents and help families who cannot meet mortgage and rent fees, especially those who have abusive clauses in their contracts.A new anti-eviction office is to be created in the town, to coordinate and determine the necessary steps to cover emergency housing situations. A new subsidised social homes complex will be set up to relocate evicted families and residents. The office will also act as a negotiator between victims and banking institutions and will aim to paralyse evictions and repossessions when possible.Spokesperson for Izquierda Unida, Daniela Paque, emphasised the importance of the association Stop Desahucios in the creation of the policy.
