AROUND 400 people gathered outside Marbella’s old bullring on Saturday in protest against plans to revive bullfights there before marching into the city centre.
Demonstrators carried banners featuring slogans including: ‘Stop Torture’ and shouted chants such as: ‘Torture is not culture, abolish bullfighting’.
The environmental group Ecologists in Action organised the march. They said bullfighting brought “shame” upon Spain.
“It is psychopathic to believe that inflicting pain and humiliation on a living creature is art or culture,” Ecologists in Action said.
The march began outside the Plaza de Toros at around 5pm before moving through the city centre and ending at the Plaza del Mar shopping centre. Some activists covered themselves in blood and mock up wounds in reference to bullfighting.
The protest comes after Marbella City Council announced plans to renovate the bullring to turn it into a multi-events venue at a cost of more than €1 million. Events would include bullfighting which ceased in Marbella in 2015, according to the council.
