POPE FRANCIS has topped a list of the most popular world leaders for Spanish people, with 75 per cent of the population viewing him positively according to a new survey.
The Sigma Dos poll also found German Chancellor Angela Merkel was the most popular European leader, with a 58 per cent approval rating.
Rosa Diaz, the director of Sigma Dos, said Pope Francis remained “unbeatable” in Spain.
“The Pope’s approval is among the highest in the world. There is the Spanish-speaking influence in addition to the fact that Spain is mostly Catholic,” Diaz said.
British Prime Minister Theresa May was the least popular European leader in Spain according to the survey. A total of 26 per cent of poll respondents supported her while 53 per cent disapproved.
The Sigma Dos survey saw almost 47,000 people across the world polled. US President Donald Trump was the most unpopular leader globally with a minus 28 per cent approval rating.
