The scale of the incident on a two-kilometre section of the A-1 at Somosierra (north of Madrid) can be clearly seen on video captured at the scene earlier today with the wreckage of mangled vehicles strewn across the carriageway.

One 62-year-old woman is reported seriously injured in the multiple road traffic accidents.

Emergency services from the Comunidad de Madrid and Castilla y Leon rushed to attend to the injured.

Firefighters had to cut free ten people who were trapped in their vehicles.

The Dirección General de Tráfico recommended avoiding the A-1 and using the A-6 or A-2 instead until the road re-opened tonight.
