A WOMAN, a three-year-old child and a baby have died in a fire in an apartment building in Spain earlier this morning (Thursday). Two more people have been rushed to hospital after the blaze.
Emergency services were called to the fire at a six-storey building at 6.40am in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, southwest of Barcelona, to find the fourth-floor ablaze.
Officials say that on the affected floor there were five people, three women and two children.
Firefighters were able to evacuate two of the women, one of them by the facade of the inner courtyard, and two children in a critical condition. The other woman was already dead.
Later, however, health workers confirmed the death of the two minors – one aged 3 and the other, a baby, at the San Juan de Dios hospital.
The two rescued women were also rushed to the same hospital with ‘minor’ injuries.
It is reported there has been no structural damage to the building and the upper floors have not been damaged by the fire, as they had their fire doors closed. The Mossos d’Esquadra police force has opened an investigation to determine the causes of the fire.
