Actor Arturo Fernandez died aged 90
POPULAR actor Arturo Fernandez died aged 90 in a Madrid hospital after complications following a fall.
He was born in Vigo in February 1929 but his family left Spain at the end of the Civil War, owing to his father’s links involvement with the CNT trade union.
Fernandez returned to Madrid in 1949, determined to become an actor. He appeared only two years later in a secondary role in the film, La señora de Fatima.
Soon famous for roles in romantic comedies as a seductive but slightly cynical womaniser, Fernandez continued to work in films, theatre and television until April this year.
He was the father of three children with his first wife, Maria Isabel Sensat. He divorced in 1987. He had lived with present partner, Carmen Quesada since 1980, when she was 21 and he 50.
He successfully underwent emergency stomach surgery but his health began to deteriorate after a fall two weeks later.
The actor was buried in his birthplace Gijon. The city hall observed a minute’s silence before the last plenary meeting, decreeing three days of mourning with flags flying at half-mast.
