WILDFIRES which broke out in Berja and Nijar on Monday are under control. The Andalucia Plan Infoca firefighting and prevention service reported that more than 40 firefighters, backed up by helicopters and aircraft, battled a blaze which broke out in the Hirmes area of Berja in the early evening. Additional personnel were brought in to join the efforts in the hilly zone after gusts of wind of up to 25 km/h stoked the flames. By the early hours of this morning (Tuesday), the fire had affected some 40 hectares of undergrowth, but the situation was contained. The fire in Nijar’s Isleta del Moro was under control by around 8am this morning, Infoca said, after 39 firefighters worked throughout the night. Efforts continue to make sure the fires are fully extinguished.
