TWO Portuguese men have been arrested on an international arrest warrant after having been found living in a caravan in Alicante. The men had previously been sentenced to 15 years in prison in Portugal for false imprisonment and human trafficking after the fugitives had allegedly taken advantage of a person with a mental illness. The victim, who was unemployed and homeless, was given an opportunity to work for the men as a street vendor of balloons and toys at fairs and festivals. This person accepted the work and moved to the city of Alicante, where according to the sentence, the victim lived “in conditions of slavery, without receiving any salary for their work, without the possibility of having a telephone, subsisting in degrading conditions and without any type of hygiene.” When the victim refused to continue working, he reportedly received death threats and was physically attacked.
