The Municipal Police in Madrid cordoned off an area near Plaza de Castilla after a platform for cleaning windows fell 160 metres from one of the Kio Towers, nearly killing a pedestrian.
The closest man to the scene of the fall was Jose Manuel Ferro who was wearing headphones at the time. Thankfully he heard the screams warning him of a large falling object above his music and a bystander grabbed him and pulled him aside before he walked directly into the path of the cleaning platform.
Ferro shared his experience on Twitter and thanked the other pedestrian who warned him of the falling platform that would have killed him. He apparently didn’t have a chance to thank him at the time of the accident as he was in shock.
The window cleaners were not harmed by the falling platform as they were hooked onto safety ropes. It fell after one of the supporting cables on one side of the structure broke.
Police and the fire brigade cleared the area but as the official investigation into the cause of the event is still underway the area remained fenced off for some time.
