A NEW initiative has been launched by the town hall in Alcoy to prevent forest fires.
The staff at the ‘Avalem Experiencia’ have started a program that trains volunteers how to monitor the environment in the local area on weekday mornings and in the afternoons they work with the civil protection volunteers to assist with various watches.
The program provides four volunteers to monitor the watchtowers in Font Roja and Mariola, four volunteers patrol the area on electric bicycles in green-belt areas such as Estepar and Raco Sant Bonaventura. There are also a couple of civil protection volunteers that patrol the area in a 4×4.
Between July 1 and August 9 there have been six shifts which, given the success of the program, will be extended throughout the whole summer from next year.
The program has been subsidised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Emergency Climate and Ecological Transition Committee.
