THE General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has announced that they are studying the possibility of reintroducing the prohibition of cars on the Formentor road from the Port de Pollença in Mallorca, Spain during the summer. It is understood that traffic limitations will likely be enforced on the popular road, with a ban on driving private motor vehicles from June 15 to September 15 between the hours of 10am and 7pm. Authorised personnel, residents of the municipality and those with reduced mobility will however not be subject to the restrictions. Working with the Consell de Mallorca and the City Council of Pollença, the DGT aim to reduce the significant number of cars who make the journey up to the iconic Formentor lighthouse – one of the most popular tourist attractions on the island. Local authorities are urging the DGT to examine the proposed restrictions to avoid repeating the same chaos that occurred last year, where traffic jams worsened at the Port de Pollença and the beach as a result of the restrictions. The DGT has reaffirmed that through their study they will ensure that any measures introduced to improve the roads will accommodate all requests made by Pollença City Council and the Consell de Mallorca.
