Breaking News: UK Scientists Predict 200 Deaths a Day in Worst Scenario

Sir Patrick Vallance has warned that at least 50,000 people a day will have COVID by October with daily deaths surging to 200 by November.

At today’s press briefing, Professor Chris Whitty confirmed the PM ‘is planning for SIX MONTHS of new curbs’. He also warned that the nation is at ‘a critical point in the pandemic’. Prof Whitty was joined by Chief Scientific Adviser Sir Patrick Vallance for a televised address to the nation, which was broadcast at 11 am Uk time.

The pair that warned if the current rate of infection continues there could be as many as a staggering 50,000 daily new cases by mid-October Last night Downing Street warned the UK is ‘in the last chance saloon’ as coronavirus cases continue to rise. Boris Johnson is expected to set out plans for new restrictions this week which could last for up to six months.

The Uk’s top scientific advisor, Prof Whitty, said, quote: ‘The trend in the UK is heading in the wrong direction and we are at a critical point in the pandemic. We are looking at the data to see how to manage the spread of the virus ahead of a very challenging winter period.’ He also said that the young are ‘not immune’ to the virus.

He warned that as older people became infected, the danger of the virus remained potent. And he said that although treatments had improved, it did not solve the problem. “Treatment is better. Doctors and nurses have learned to treat it more effectively. And we have new drugs… but these will not take deaths down to trivial levels,” he said.

The warning came ahead of an expected press conference from Mr Johnson as early as tomorrow when he will set out his latest blueprint for tackling the spread of the disease after a surge in cases. Mr Johnson held talks with Prof Whitty and Sir Patrick yesterday and the address by the advisers will be seen as an attempt by Number 10 to ‘roll the pitch’ for the Prime Minister to announce new restrictions.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock was today unable to guarantee that pubs will still be open at the weekend. He said the UK is facing a “difficult moment.” He went on to say: “If we do have to take action it will be different to last time. We have learnt a huge amount about how to tackle the virus. But the number one thing for everybody is if everybody follows the existing rules, the vast majority of people are, but if everybody does then that will help us to control it.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan is pushing the government for a lockdown in London.
