Cigarette prices go up

If you’re a smoker living in Spain, you might want to check your wallet before heading to the local tobacconist.

As of this weekend, several popular cigarette brands have gone up in price. The increase came into effect on  Saturday, April 5, following a resolution published in the Boletín Oficial del Estado (BOE), Spain’s official state bulletin.

The updated price list affects shops across mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands. Brands like Marlboro, Chesterfield, Ducal and Austin are all included, with prices per pack now starting at €4.60 and going up to over €9, depending on the format and brand.

The rise comes just weeks after other well-known names such as Fortuna, Nobel, L&M and Winston were hit by similar price hikes. It’s part of an ongoing adjustment that’s slowly nudging Spain’s tobacco prices closer to the European average — although for now, they still remain among the lowest on the continent.

Tobacco prices still low in Spain, but rising steadily

Even with these latest increases, buying cigarettes in Spain is still much lighter on the pocket compared to other European countries. The average price of a pack here sits around €4.60, while in places like Ireland it can cost nearly €13. That said, it’s clear that Spanish authorities are tightening the screws, in line with broader EU health objectives.

The price changes have been published under the legal framework set out in Spain’s Law 13/1998, which regulates the tobacco market and related tax policies. So while this weekend’s update may not come as a total surprise, it’s definitely one that many smokers will feel — especially those who buy regularly.

From premium blends to slim versions and even rolling and pipe tobacco, the price list is extensive. And with no signs of this trend slowing down, it might be worth thinking twice before your next trip to the estanco.

Not just cigarettes: Cigar and pipe tobacco prices increase

It’s not just cigarettes getting pricier. The update also includes cigars and pipe tobacco, with brands like Zino Nicaragua and specialty pipe blends from Musth, Musthave and Tangiers climbing as well. Some pipe tobacco tins are now priced at nearly €22 for 125 grams, while others like Tangiers can hit €35 for a 250g pouch.

These aren’t just symbolic increases — over time, they add up, especially for regular consumers. For now, though, Spain remains a relatively affordable place to smoke. But with public health targets becoming stricter across the EU, it’s safe to say these prices are likely to keep rising.
