Unearthing Vera’s Ancient Past Image: Vera Town Hall
The town of Vera is digging deeper into its history with the start of the fourth phase of an archaeological project at the ancient medieval city of Bayra, located at the Cerro del Espíritu Santo. This campaign is part of a larger six-year effort by the Vera Town Hall to preserve and celebrate the town’s rich heritage.
Excavating key areas of historical importance
Work began this month and will continue through June, focusing on several important areas of the site. Excavations will take place at the Alcázar, the fortified palace, the western entrance, and the eastern suburbs, where new living spaces were discovered in previous digs. One of the major goals of this phase is to recover a section of the city wall for future restoration.
Bringing the Past to Life for the Public
The project isn’t just about uncovering the past, it’s also about sharing it with the community. Alongside the excavation, the town hall is launching a new guided tour program called ‘Abierto por Obras’ (Open for Works), giving visitors a chance to see the ongoing work up close.

Inspiring young minds through education
Local schools will also be involved, with educational activities designed to engage students and teach them about the area’s history.
Connecting past and present
With each new discovery, Vera is uncovering more of its medieval roots, connecting the past to the present for future generations to enjoy.
