Spanish tourist’s bear photo in Romania turns bloody

A 74-year-old Spanish tourist had a horror holiday in Romania.

The woman was bitten by a bear on Wednesday afternoon near the entrance to the famous Transfăgărășan mountain road in Romania.

According to the Romanian media, the attack occurred close to the Vidraru Dam, a popular stop for tourists in Argeș County.

She tried to take a photo of the bear from inside her car

The woman was reportedly inside her car with the window down, attempting to photograph the bear when it lunged at her and bit her hand, as can be seen from the image obtained exclusively by Euro Weekly News.

A witness called the emergency line 112, prompting the immediate dispatch of a local ambulance and mountain gendarmes.

Third attack in one day

This marks the third bear attack in the area within 24 hours, following incidents involving a 77-year-old Polish man and a 53-year-old German tourist.

In all cases, the encounters happened on or near the Transfăgărășan. Authorities issued a Ro-Alert (national phone alert) to warn residents and tourists in the area, and extra patrols have been deployed.

Romania’s bears boom

Romania is home to one of the largest brown bear populations in Europe. According to a recent census by the Romanian Forestry Research Institute, the number of bears is far higher than previously thought—estimated now between 10,419 and 12,770, compared to earlier figures of 8,000.

With rising bear numbers and growing tourist interest in wild nature, officials are urging caution and stricter safety protocols across popular mountain routes.
