Benidorm has been honoured with the ‘Communications Talent’ award for Best Public Initiative for its project Teleasistencia Benidorm. Internet of People, an innovative tool providing assistance to the elderly and vulnerable through artificial intelligence and data analysis.
The award was presented on the evening of Friday October 3 by the Official College and the Valencian Association of Telecommunications Technical Engineers during a gala at the Huerto del Cura hotel in Elche, bringing together representatives from the technological, institutional and academic sectors across the Valencian Community.
Benidorm Mayor Toni Pérez collected the award alongside Innovation Councillor Aida García Mayor, highlighting that it recognises “the joint work that brings together technology and social welfare to improve people’s lives.”
A life-saving system
The Teleasistencia Benidorm. Internet of People project was developed by tech companies Iotsens and Global Energy & Trading (GET), supported by the Town Hall and in collaboration with the Valencian Innovation Agency, the University of Valencia, and Hidraqua.
According to the mayor, it is “a non-invasive telecare system for elderly or vulnerable people that uses artificial intelligence and big data to detect any unusual behaviour in their homes.”
The system monitors energy consumption patterns in real time in participating homes. If it detects significant deviations—such as inactivity, unusual spikes in consumption, or changes in normal routines—it triggers intelligent alerts that activate municipal social care protocols, enabling swift action in potential emergencies.
Pérez emphasised that the project “has already been successfully tested in over 50 homes in Benidorm” and that its implementation “has allowed timely intervention in critical situations, saving lives and strengthening social care.”
Recognition for public innovation
The mayor, who is also President of the Alicante Provincial Council, said the award highlights Benidorm’s commitment to digital transformation in public services and its leadership in using technology as a tool to serve people.
“This award,” Pérez added, “reflects Benidorm’s commitment to social innovation, public-private collaboration, and the application of technological solutions that improve the daily lives of our residents.”
The recognition aligns with the city’s ongoing smart city strategy, where technology, sustainability, and social welfare form the three pillars of the Benidorm Smart City model.
