More than 1.3 million travellers worldwide have cast their votes – and Madrid has come out on top as Europe’s most desired destination for 2026, ahead of Nicosia, Verona and even Paris.

It’s official: Madrid is the place Europe wants to be.

The Spanish capital has been named Best European Destination 2026, one of the most prestigious tourism accolades on the continent, after securing 127,438 votes from international travellers in a global public poll organised by European Best Destinations.

In a competition that drew over 1.3 million votes from around the world, Madrid finished ahead of Nicosia (Cyprus), the Štajerska region (Slovenia), Verona (Italy) and Paris (France), which completed the top five.

127,438 votes – and not one from home

The result is significant not just for the headline number, but for how it was achieved.

Participants in the vote were unable to select destinations in their own country, ensuring the outcome reflected genuine international demand. More than 127,000 travellers from across the globe chose Madrid as the European city they most want to visit in 2026.

The award is granted by European Best Destinations, a Brussels-based organisation that promotes tourism across the European Union in collaboration with more than 300 tourist offices and the European Commission’s EDEN network of sustainable destinations.

To compile the shortlist, the organisation combined Eurostat data analysis with search trends, social media growth and international media visibility, before opening the final decision to registered travellers worldwide.

A “vibrant and human” urban model

In announcing the result, European Best Destinations praised Madrid’s ability to combine world-class cultural heritage with the energy of its neighbourhoods, expansive green spaces, innovative architecture and a gastronomic scene that continues to evolve.

The organisation described Madrid as representing “a new urban model: vibrant and human, cosmopolitan and warm.” It added that the vote reflects a clear shift among European and international travellers towards destinations offering culture, authenticity and quality of life.

In short, substance over spectacle.

“This award belongs to the people of Madrid”

Almudena Maíllo, Madrid’s Tourism Councillor, said the recognition is shared by the city’s residents.

This award belongs to the people of Madrid, who make this city, with its welcoming character, a unique place,” she said.

She also thanked tourism professionals and everyone working daily to ensure the capital offers the best of itself to visitors.

Maíllo underlined that more than 127,000 travellers worldwide choosing Madrid as Europe’s most desired destination is a clear endorsement of the city’s positioning as a high-quality tourism destination.

Another boost to Madrid’s global standing

The Best European Destination 2026 title adds to a growing list of international recognitions for the Spanish capital.

In the past two years, Madrid has:

  • Revalidated second place as the world’s most attractive urban destination according to Euromonitor
  • Ranked among the top five cities globally according to Resonance
  • Been named Europe’s most desired city by British magazine Wanderlust
  • Been awarded Best Meetings and Conferences Destination in the world by World Travel Awards

Together, these distinctions reinforce Madrid’s standing among the most relevant urban destinations worldwide and highlight its growing reputation, appeal and ability to generate high-value experiences for travellers.

With more than 1.3 million votes cast and a clear international mandate, Madrid’s selection as Best European Destination 2026 is more than a trophy moment. It signals sustained global confidence in a tourism model built on quality, cultural depth and long-term value.

And if the world’s travellers have already made up their minds for 2026, it seems Madrid is not just on the map – it is leading it.
