Talks are in place for a possible tram connection between Torrevieja and the Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport, as outlined during Torrevieja mayor Eduardo Dolón’s recent visit to the Elche Town Hall. The visit aimed to reinforce joint work and collaboration between the two municipalities and to call for improvements in infrastructure and connectivity.

Possible tram links between the Vega Baja and the Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport

The improvement of railway connections, as well as the implementation of a future tram, were among the topics discussed at the meeting. Mayor of Elche, Pablo Ruz Villanueva, stated, “the tram can be a great platform to connect the Vega Baja region with Elche, the airport and Alicante.”

This connection between Torrevieja and the airport would be a major milestone for improving the connectivity of the region. As it stands, the Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport is one of the busiest airports in Spain by foot traffic, with nearly 20 million passengers recorded by the end of 2025, smashing the previous year’s records. It is also the main international gateway for the province of Alicante.

Torrevieja: A Costa Blanca hotspot with some connectivity issues

Torrevieja is also one of the principal Costa Blanca hubs, a popular destination for tourists during the peak season for its culture, coastal lifestyle, and abundance of music festivals and events. A direct and convenient tram connection would help to attract more visitors to the municipality, as well as boost local businesses and bring more attention to the whole of the Vega Baja region.

Most journeys from Torrevieja to the airport involve the N-332 or the AP-7 motorways. In peak season, the traffic spikes significantly, causing delays and headaches for Torrevieja locals. The future tram could also help to reduce congestion on these main roads.

Tram talks to continue

Even still, the hypothetical tram is still just that: hypothetical. Possible routes, operating models and costs are still being discussed.

As for the meeting, the visit concluded with a tribute to Torrevieja, through the dedication of a palm tree at the Municipal Park of Elche. The two vastly important Costa Blanca South municipalities will continue to collaborate in order to improve infrastructure, connectivity and collaboration and further unite all towns in the Vega Baja region.
