Anyone for tea? – Afternoon tea at La Fonda

I’d almost given up on afternoon teas in Marbella. I used to love going to The Boardwalk but then they closed.  I tried one in an exclusive hotel Estepona way and it really didn’t hit the mark: too many additional items and thick Spanish cake bread, not enough savoury and overdose of sugar. Although I appreciate that it is the “in” thing to interpret the English afternoon tea back home, when you don’t have it very often, I at least want the real McCoy.

Through an interview on English Edition on RTV Marbella with Debbie Wingham of Crumbz Cookies and Raimonda of La Fonda Heritage Hotel, I found out that they have just started serving afternoon teas.  The hotel is nestled in the Old Town and tea is served in an elegantly restored 16th century hermitage; I had to give it a go.

The verdict: I possibly had one of the most enjoyable afternoon teas ever. The bread and the cut of the sandwiches was exactly as one would hope, the fillings smoked salmon, cucumber and egg, a delightful scone and other pastries, accompanied by a selection of many different teas on continuous refill.

The service, crockery, cutlery and linens were also exceptional, very elegant and totally reminiscent of a scene from Bridgerton, with the soundtrack of the show playing in the background.

Such has been my experience I have since binge-watched all 4 seasons of Bridgerton and am looking forward very much to my next re-enactment at La Fonda.

If you go, let me know if you were equally impressed. Perhaps you know of other places for me to try too? I’d love to hear from you if so.
